After a stint in the technical trade press in the 1990s I jumped ship and joined the world of consumer magazine publishing, spending several years on what’s now called BBC Focus, where I rose through the ranks to become editor.

Next up, I took on the editor‘s chair at Geographical, the magazine of the Royal Geographical Society in the UK. I sat there for three years, during which time I really got involved with travel photography.

In 2004 I won the PPA’s coveted Independent Magazine Editor of the Year award, but also steered the title to the more important runner-up place in the Specialist Consumer Magazine of the Year category. I was also a judge on the Thomas Cook Travel Book of the Year, and this made me realise I wanted to write travel books too.

I left Geographical in 2006 and joined the Explorers Journal as the UK’s contributing editor, specialising in feature writing and European affairs. In a parallel career, since 2007 I’ve been Management Editor of the monthly magazine Engineering & Technology, the organ of the IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology) in
the UK, where I am a remote worker.

I’m a fellow of both the Royal Geographical Society in the UK and the Explorers Club in New York. My first book is called Travels in the World of Books, described by Alexander McCall Smith as ‘a triumph.’ It’s successor – A Library in My Luggage – is due for publication in 2012.
